Microsoft's popular gaming platform the XBox 360 console has recently been redesigned in order to make several improvements that have been eagerly anticipated.  A sleeker, smaller, more lightweight design will please many users, as well as whisper quiet performance and a new 250 gigabyte hard drive.  It's certain to become a popular upgrade for existing XBox 360 owners, and will also be appreciated by users looking to purchase an XBox 360 for the first time.

Five years in the making, the latest XBox 360 model is the culmination of a good deal of positive design changes and improvements.  The console itself is much leaner than earlier models, taking up a full 22 percent less space.  The weight has also been reduced by 17 percent.  This new XBox 360 model is definitely an aesthetically pleasing redesign, sleek, slim, and black.  The more compact design allows the new XBox 360 console to fit into people's lives with much more ease, and allows the machine's ventilation requirements to be much more easily fulfilled.

The new model sports a 250 gigabyte hard drive, a touch sensitive power and disk tray, Wi-Fi built into the system, and brand new ports for extra flexibility including five USB ports, HDMI and A/V ports, and a dedicated AUX Kinect port.  Helping the new XBox 360 console machine to slim down is the advanced new Valhalla motherboard, which is 30 percent smaller than the Jasper motherboard used in the older console systems.

Some users have expressed disappointment that the new 250 gigabyte hard drive is proprietary and incompatible with older hard drives, so owners of older systems are not able to use their old drives though they may wish to do so.  If users of old systems wish to transfer their files they simply need to purchase a data migration cable.  The new proprietary 250 drives are well designed and portable and will certainly be a great benefit to dedicated gamers.

The new machine is also whisper quiet, and users of older XBox 360 models will be very impressed by the significant reduction in noise levels produced by the standard operation of this newest model. The new advanced hard drive and quick transfer times from DVD's mean that installing games is an incredibly quick and easy process, so it should seldom be necessary to run games directly off of the DVD.

Microsoft has also gotten rid of the dreaded "Red Ring of Death" error, which could crash and irrecoverably damage a system due to heat accumulation and poor ventilation.  The new XBox consoles are equipped with an advanced monitoring system that will shut the machine down if it ever enters into danger of succumbing to this problem.  This will save many XBox 360 systems from damage and prevent a good deal of user frustration.

There is no great difference in gaming performance; however, with all the other improvements made this is still a very worthwhile upgrade.  The new dimensions of the console are 270 mm x 75 mm x 264 mm, and it weighs 2.9 kg.  XBox 360 gaming enthusiasts and new XBox users alike will appreciate all the new features that make this the best XBox 360 gaming console to date.  Especially with the new XBox Kinect sensor system, which allows users to interact with games without bulky hand held controllers.
